Grenada Red Cross Society Deploys Aid to Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Wake of Hurricane Beryl
The Grenada Red Cross Society (GRCS) is mobilising its resources to support the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl on Monday. Early Tuesday morning, a team of Red Cross volunteers loaded 200 tarpaulins and 50 shelter kits onto a boat provided by the national authorities for deployment to Carriacou.
President of the Grenada Red Cross Society, Samantha Dickson was on site supporting the team loading the supplies. “Thankfully, our geographic space was not 100% impacted, which gives us the advantage in the South where we have our main warehouse, to be able to support the operations that are taking place in Carriacou,” Ms. Dickson said.
While assessments are ongoing, preliminary reports show significant damage to buildings on Carriacou. The tarpaulins will assist in bolstering shelter for buildings without roofs. The shelter kits contain tools like shovels, saws, wires, measuring tapes, ropes, shears, and hammers to aid families in erecting and repairing shelters.
“We’re asking people to be patient, tolerant, and to look out for each other. The Red Cross is here to support as best we can, together with IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) and our partners,” Ms. Dickson emphasised.
In addition to providing emergency relief supplies, the Grenada Red Cross Society offers Restoring Family Links (RFL), Psychosocial Support (PSS), and First Aid as part of its disaster response.
The Red Cross also donated blankets and pillows to the national authorities on Sunday for use within the shelters currently housing approximately 3,000 people.
The GRCS is actively engaged in operational planning to ensure a swift and coordinated response to the needs on the ground. This includes collaborating with local authorities and other humanitarian organisations for a unified relief effort.
